The proper way to take a bath
Whole-body bathing increases the strain on the heart because it makes the heart expand and the capacity of the lungs to decrease. Half-body bathing, soaking up to the pit of the stomach in a bathtub, is the best way to take a relaxing and long bath. We also recommend floating by stretching out the lower body as much as possible. We especially recommend lying in a bathtub by putting your head on the edge of the bathtub and floating for someone whose heart and/or lungs are weak, someone with high blood pressure, or an elderly person.
Points of bathing
- Take a long, half body bath in water that is as tepid as possible.
- Lie in a bathtub by putting your head on the bathtub and float.
- Avoid bathing more than 3 times a day. (Elderly persons should bathe no more than twice.)
- 1. Begin by pouring hot water over your body.
- Pour hot water over your body slowly to adjust to the water temperature. Start by pouring water over the feet, and then the waist, shoulders and chest. Soak in the bathtub after pouring hot water over your body first, or by taking a shower if possible.
- 2. Half-body bathing to adjust to the temperature
- Don't soak your whole body immediately when you bathe. Adjust to the hot water by half-body bathing first to avoid the rapid strain on your body by water temperature and pressure.
- 3. Don't prolong bathing time
- The proper amount of time to soak in a bathtub is when sweat beads on your forehead. Don't soak for such as long time that sweat starts to run down.
- 4. Take a break
- Get out of the bathtub and sit on the edge while putting your feet in the water, or take a break around the washing area.
- 5. Move your hands and feet in the hot water
- During a second bathing, the joints in your hands and feet as your muscles should be relaxed. It is also effective to twist around the waist.
- 6. Don't take a shower after bathing
- It depends on the type of hot spring, but the medicinal properties of the water may be washed away from taking a shower and reduce its effectiveness. Dry off the body by patting away the water.
- 7. Receive adequate hydration
- Water in the body decreases while taking a bath. Hydrate your body by drinking lukewarm water, tea, sports drink, or a similar type of drink. Drink hot spring water if it is allowed.
- 8. Take adequate breaks
- Taking a bath is energy intensive and blood pressure changes, so take a break longer than 30 minutes to allow your physical condition to become stable. Dry off your body and hair so as not to feel a chill.
